DETROIT, MI Detroit filmmaker Stoney Watts is officially making his mark in the entertainment industry with the release of his directorial debut, Play or Get Played, now available for streaming on Tubi. Since its premiere, the film has been generating strong buzz among audiences, earning praise across social media for its captivating performances, emotional depth, and engaging storyline.
Starring Nadia Calhoun, Tracey Wilson, Tierra JaCole, and Ayla Thompson, Play or Get Played delivers a compelling drama filled with love, betrayal, hidden secrets, and life changing consequences. The film was written by Tonja Ayers and Regine Coney, with cinematography handled by Thomas Pawlowski, helping bring the story’s emotional intensity to life on screen. A Detroit native, Watts entered the film industry in 2024 as a Production Assistant, determined to learn every aspect of the filmmaking process. His work ethic and passion quickly set him apart, leading him to contribute to more than 40 productions within his first year. Along the way, he expanded his experience by taking on producing and executive producing roles, building a diverse foundation in film and television production.
In 2025, Watts advanced further by stepping into the role of Assistant Director, where he refined his leadership skills and deepened his understanding of storytelling, production logistics, and on-set management. Those experiences ultimately prepared him for his biggest challenge yet directing his first feature film.
“I knew I wanted to do more than just be on set,” said Watts. “Every project taught me something. Play or Get Played gave me the opportunity to take everything I learned and apply it as a director.”
Beyond his professional achievements, Watts is also a devoted father to his two sons, Jayce and Cannon, who continue to inspire his drive, creativity, and determination to succeed.
With Play or Get Played gaining positive momentum and connecting with audiences, Watts is already focused on the next chapter of his filmmaking journey. His upcoming feature film, 1208, is scheduled to begin production this fall, further establishing him as one of Detroit’s promising creative voices.
