The Unforgettable Debut of Paper Empire at MIP London

6 March 2025

The riveting TV series Paper Empire is on track to become the next must-watch binge phenomenon once it finds a home on a network or a streamer. Created by the renowned Robert Gillings, the drama and thrills packed series is stacked with stars such as Wesley Snipes, Steve Guttenberg, Cuba Gooding Jr., Denise Richards, Kelsey Grammer, and the main character being played by Robert Davi.

Paper Empire explores the high-stakes world of cryptocurrency fraud, following financial mastermind Laurence Fintch (Robert Davi) as his risky crypto scheme spirals into a financial catastrophe.

Many are wondering where the idea for this series came about. Gillings provides a glimpse into the making of Paper Empire:

“My inspiration comes from my interest, studies, and allowing my wandering mind to be open to new ideas. Paper Empire’s inspiration comes from the revolutionizing technologies that are changing our way of life.”

Who, What, When, & Where

This long awaited show was showcased with its pilot episode at the iconic MIP London event. A screening was held on the evening of February 25th at the classic IET London on Savoy Place. Some of those in attendance included the creative genius behind the show Robert Gillings, lead actor Robert Davi, and co-star Carol Alt.

Beyond the show’s stars, the event also attracted a range of other high-profile celebrities. Bradley Riches, Amel Rachedi, Chris Baber, and Matt Johnson were all seen taking in the night’s excitement.

Over 1,700 delegates from more than 70 countries registered for MIP London, including over 800 buyers. The premiere was part of a multi-genre conference program at the event, designed to bring together more people, business, and opportunities during a significant week in the TV industry calendar.

The Unveiling

There was truly no better place for the pilot’s debut than MIP London. The anticipation for Paper Empire most certainly lived up to its expectations, leaving the audience wanting more.

Paper Empire is ambitious, independent, and its premise could not be timelier,” said Lucy Smith Director of MIP London and MIPCOM Cannes. “It’s premiering at MIP London further delivers on our promise of staging a strong inaugural programme during London’s biggest week of content.”

Director Robert Gillings was equally delighted about the event, exclaiming, “I am thrilled to be premiering Paper Empire’s pilot episode at the inaugural MIP London, it will certainly be epic.”

And indeed, it lived up to the hype, delivering an unforgettable experience for those in attendance.

How it Started, Where it’s Going

Paper Empire is already making history, and it’s only been out for a few short days. It marks the first American TV series to film in Saudi Arabia, with its third season set against the historic backdrop of the ancient city of AlUla. The decision to film in AlUla was made to enhance the show’s narrative, hoping to strike a chord with viewers.

For one of the already filmed episodes the cast travelled to AlUla to gauge the energy of the place themselves. Co-producer Michael Tadross Jr. knew this was the place to film.

“After visiting AlUla earlier this year, we immediately knew we had to film here. The incredible landscapes and incomparable scenery are a perfect backdrop for the narrative’s progression, as the stakes become higher and more suspenseful, and the characters journey outside the US for the first time.”

What’s Next?

With Paper Empire already adventuring into uncharted territory, both literally and figuratively, the possibilities for what’s to come are endless. Its debut at MIP London has inevitably set the series up for success, for whichever platform it lands on.

Paper Empire has captured international attention with its star-studded cast, bold premise, and unforgettable MIP London premiere. With its exciting start, the series is set for even greater achievements and all we need to know now is where and when can the rest of us watch it.
