When A. Shoaib Khan was previously featured as one of the “Rising Stars” of West Hollywood, his story was one of a young filmmaker determined to turn a lifelong fascination with movies into a career. Born in Pakistan and raised across different parts of the world because of his father’s military career, Shoaib grew up experiencing different cultures, environments, and ways of thinking.
That constant movement shaped more than just his worldview. It also helped him discover the one constant he could always return to: films.
Movies became a source of comfort, imagination, and escape. Over time, that fascination developed into a clear ambition to create stories that could have the same kind of impact on audiences that movies had on him.
Today, that journey has taken another significant step forward. A. Shoaib Khan is currently working at Dhar Mann Studios as an Assistant Director, building on years of experience across independent productions, short films, and filmmaking projects.
From Law School to Los Angeles
Shoaib’s route into filmmaking was not completely straightforward. Before pursuing his passion for cinema, he followed his family’s advice and studied law. While the field ultimately wasn’t where he saw his future, the experience gave him skills that would later prove surprisingly useful on a film set. Law taught him about communication, organisation, responsibility, and understanding how people and systems work skills that would eventually become valuable in production management and directing.
Eventually, Shoaib made the decision to take the risk he had been thinking about for years. He moved to Los Angeles to study filmmaking. It was a decision that changed the direction of his life. Once immersed in the filmmaking environment, he began learning the realities of production from the ground up. He started as a grip, gaining practical experience on set and learning how different departments operate together to bring a production to life. Over time, his focus shifted toward Assistant Directing and Directing.
Finding His Place Behind the Camera
Assistant Directing became an area where Shoaib found a natural fit. The role requires far more than simply keeping track of a schedule. Assistant Directors are often responsible for coordinating different departments, communicating with crew members, managing time, helping maintain an organised set, and ensuring that productions continue moving forward despite the inevitable challenges that arise during filming. For Shoaib, those responsibilities brought together many of the skills he had developed throughout his unconventional journey.

His background in law contributed to his ability to communicate and manage situations, while his filmmaking education and practical experience helped him understand the creative needs of a production. At the same time, directing allowed him to explore the other side of filmmaking developing stories and translating ideas from his imagination onto the screen.
One of the projects that became particularly meaningful to him was his short film “Death of The Party.” The production pushed him through demanding circumstances, including overnight shoots, large party sequences, and stunt coordination. Rather than simply viewing those challenges as obstacles, Shoaib used them as opportunities to grow. With every project, his confidence as a filmmaker continued to develop.
A New Chapter at Dhar Mann Studios
Today, Shoaib is taking those experiences into a professional production environment through his work as an Assistant Director at Dhar Mann Studios. The move represents an important evolution in his career.
Independent filmmaking gave him the opportunity to experiment, make decisions, solve problems, and develop his own creative voice. Working within a larger professional production environment brings a different set of challenges and opportunities requiring precision, collaboration, communication, and the ability to keep a production moving efficiently. For someone who has spent years learning the craft from different perspectives, the Assistant Director role provides an opportunity to continue developing those skills on a larger professional platform.
It also reflects the progression of a filmmaker who has consistently been willing to start at the ground level, learn the process, and take on greater responsibility.

The Lessons Behind the Progress
Shoaib’s journey has never been entirely linear.
There were periods of uncertainty, personal challenges, and moments when he questioned his own abilities. One of the biggest personal challenges he previously described was learning to break through his own reservations. As someone who naturally considered himself reserved, expressing his creative perspective required him to step outside his comfort zone.
That process continues to influence how he approaches filmmaking today. Rather than expecting every decision to be perfect, Shoaib has come to value movement and action. One of the lessons he took from his experiences was simple: a decision is often better than indecision.
That mindset has become increasingly important as his responsibilities have grown.
Looking Ahead

From moving between countries as a child, to studying law, to relocating to Los Angeles, working his way up on film sets, directing independent productions, and now working professionally as an Assistant Director at Dhar Mann Studios, A. Shoaib Khan’s story is ultimately about persistence and evolution.
His career is still developing, but the foundation has already been built through years of hands-on experience. The filmmaker who once found comfort in movies is now helping create the productions behind them. And perhaps the most interesting part of Shoaib’s journey is that the story is far from finished. With his experience as a Director, Assistant Director, and filmmaker continuing to expand, his next chapter will be defined by the projects he chooses to take on, the stories he wants to tell, and the creative voice he continues to develop.
For now, one thing is clear: the journey from being inspired by films to helping bring them to life has already taken A. Shoaib Khan a long way and there is still plenty more to come.
